Always Be There

Illya had been angry with Napoleon and had refused to allow him to pick him up for work that morning.  The American had gone out the night before and met a Thrush woman-again.

When Napoleon was able finally to pull himself together enough to call his partner it had been at three in the morning.

Once more Illya came to the rescue, assisting his battered partner into the car and dropped him off at his apartment after spending the ride home giving the American a piece of his mind.

Napoleon had assured him he could make it upstairs by himself, and so Kuryakin left, deliberately not telling him to pick him up for work in the morning. He needed some time to cool down after once again rescuing his partner from his own stupidity.

Illya arrived at headquarters and went straight to his lab in the morning, hoping to put some time between him and Napoleon. He understood the American’s needs, but not his desire to risk his life in pursuit of companionship.

Looking up from his microscope around noon, he was surprised that Napoleon hadn’t come to the lab with an apologetic smile and lunch.  At one o’clock he called their office, but there was no answer.

Finally at two o’clock, Illya called to see if his partner had checked in yet.  When he was told he hadn’t, he became worried and called Napoleon at home, listening to the phone ring, unanswered.  Taking off his lab coat, he replaced it with a suit jacket and headed to the apartment.

After knocking on the door, Illya waited only a minute before using his key to let himself in. He flipped on the light and saw Napoleon’s coat on the floor something he knew his partner would never do. He picked it up from the floor and felt that it was damp. Illya looked and saw his hand was red with blood.

He hurried down the hallway to the bedroom where he found Napoleon lying on the floor, blood pooling around him.   He quickly checked out his partner finding a faint pulse and shallow breathing.

Unable to wake the downed agent, he called for help and held a towel to the wound in Napoleon’s side. An UNCLE doctor and ambulance came quickly to his call and rushed his partner to headquarters and medical.

Mr. Waverly came to check on his CEA and found Illya waiting for word,.

“What happened Mr. Kuryakin?”

Not wanting to get his partner into trouble, he said, “He called for help last night after being attacked.  When I arrived, he was alone but told me he was okay.  Today he did not show up, and I went to see what had happened and found him still at home.”

He hoped Waverly would accept what he’d said until his partner was able to give his own account of what had occurred.  The look on Waverly’s face let him know his explanations would be acknowledged for now.

icuHours later Illya was allowed to see Napoleon. The American’s eyes were closed; his breathing was assisted with oxygen. He was pale, lying there dressed in a hospital gown, and attached to a capped IV with an empty bag of blood hanging by his bed.

The beeping monitors reassured the Russian that he was still alive.  He thought about how many times in the past these same monitors had comforted him showing that Napoleon was with him.

Napoleon opened his and smiled to see his partner sitting next to him.

“You’re here,” he sighed.

“Where did you expect me to be?” Illya asked.

“You were so angry; I wasn’t sure you would be here.”

“I will also be here for you. Why Napoleon did you not call me for help?” Illya said the hurt obvious in his voice that his partner would believe his anger would prevent him from helping.

“I didn’t think it was that serious and felt I could handle it.  You were angry enough with me, and I didn’t want to make it worse.”

“Then why didn’t you call me when you discovered how badly you were hurt?”

“I didn’t have time.  Once I entered my apartment, I made my way to the bedroom but that’s all I remember.”

Illya shook his head, “Napoleon…..”

“I know.  I really do try but she was so beautiful and so willing to share the night with me.”

After a few minutes of silence, Napoleon asked.  “Was Mr. Waverly here?”

Illya nodded.

“What did he say?”

“He asked what happened.  I told him you were attacked but do not think he believed my version.  I’m afraid my friend you are in for another reprimand.”

“And some time on desk duty until you learn to control your impulses, Mr. Solo.”  In the doorway stood their boss with a frown on his face.

“Yes sir.  I’ll try.” Napoleon acknowledged the dressing-down.

Waverly shook his head.  He understood his CEA would try, but changing the way he was would change the person he was. He only hoped to give him time to think and reflect on his behavior.

After Waverly left, Illya lifted Napoleon’s hand.

“My friend, I may get angry at you but will always be there to cover your back.”

“Thanks,” Napoleon answered as he drifted off to sleep knowing that he was safe once again because Illya would always be there for him

Memorial Day

The men and women of UNCLE gathered in the cafeteria silently watching the New York parade celebrating Memorial Day. Many of the men stood at attention as the flag unit past the camera. Each spoke of someone that they had loved and lost due to the wars that required that sacrifice.

In one corner, the sole Russian agent sat not watching television or commenting. He felt the glances he was receiving as units representing different wars pass the camera. He was about to leave the room when noticed his partner coming toward him.

Although normally quiet, Napoleon had noticed his partner's increasing withdrawal from those around him the past week.

"Where you off to partner?"

"I have reports to finish, excuse me."

"Ah Illya, I was wondering if you could accompany me. I've someplace to go and would like some company."

The Russian was going to say no, but the look on his friend's face made him change his mind, "If you wish Napoleon, I will come with you."

As the car pulled away from the curb, both men were lost in their thoughts about the day. For Napoleon, he remembered friends and men he lost during the war. He had visited some of their graves this week helping him to feel some peace in the quiet setting of their final resting place.

Illya thought about the one man who meant everything to him but whose grave was unknown. Unable to say goodbye to his father, he always felt empty at times like this.

….

When they reached Nyack, a suburb of New York, Napoleon pulled into the entrance of a Russian cemetery. Illya looked uncertainly at his friend. Saying nothing, Napoleon walked into the center of it before stopping before a monument of a Russian soldier.

Illya eyes questioned his partner.cemetery

"I know you can't be home to honor your father, but thought you might find some peace here," with this he moved away from his partner leaving him considering at statue.

Examining the statue, he read the inscription. "In memory of our forefathers, who died in defense of their county many miles from home and buried in unknown graves. Let us not forget them in this land of freedom."

Gently he traced each word and felt a lump in his throat as he blinked back tears that threatened to come. At the touch of his partner's hand brought his own to cover it. "Thank you my friend. But why?"

"We are a country of many nationalities, each have contributed to the freedom we cherish. We all need someplace to speak to those we loved and lost, and I thought you might consider this one yours while in this country. I'll wait for you in the car."

"Please stay." His hand remaining on his partner's.

The two men shared the quiet, one an American, one a Russian who at one time would have been enemies. Now, each thought of those who sacrificed their lives to ensure the freedom they now fought to preserve.

Illya rushed into his office and hid behind the file cabinet.

“I am not here.” he called out as he passed his partner’s desk.

“What is going on?”

The door opened and two secretaries came in.

“Did Illya come in here?” they asked.

“No.  Did you try his lab?”

The women left leaving Napoleon chuckling as Illya came out from hiding.

“Okay, give.”

“They want me to judge their baking contest.”

“You do like to eat.”

“Do you remember what happened when Henderson, last year’s judge, had the loser do his paperwork?”

“I hear an assignment coming on.”

“Thanks partner.”

Shattered Glass

Illya sat next to his partner, hand on his shoulder, to let him know he was there.  Napoleon was twisting and turning in the throes of a nightmare.

The last assignment had almost been successful but at the last minute although bullets had done minimum damage and Napoleon now laid in medical unconscious.  It was the infectious bacteria that tipped them that was racing though Napoleon body.  His temperature was over 102, and doctors were unable to bring it down.

Feeling helpless, the most Illya could do was hope his friend knew he was there.  Talking softly about the good times they had shared, he tried to make a difference.  He replaced the warm rag once more with a fresh one trying to make Napoleon more comfortable.

Napoleon had been in a long dark tunnel as the explosion went off.  Rocks fell all around him. burying him.  Illya had been on the other side of the building and this time he knew that the Russian wouldn’t make it even though he heard his partner’s voice calling out to him.  As he felt the last breath leave his body, he suddenly found himself in the middle of the ocean.

Unsure how he gotten there, he felt the cold water pulling him down.  No one and nothing was around him.  Dying in water had always been a fear and now it was going to happen.  The coldness had actually made him numb and soon he felt his last breath escaping.  He was descending into the darkness.

The darkness was replaced by a car tumbled down the hill in which he was being thrown from side to side.  He saw Illya ejected from the car before it slammed into the rocks.  A voice was calling his name. He recognized it as Illya’s so knew his friend and partner had survived.  Smiling he was sure that this was the end as the blood poured out of his wounds, but Illya was safe.

Out of the blackness, he had found himself now waiting for the Thrush agent to reach Waverly’s office.  He was standing behind the glass, gun drawn, ready to do his job and to fulfill his responsibility by keeping Waverly safe.  The man came through the door aiming and firing. The bullets hit the glass that was protecting him.  Instead of stopping the bullets, he felt each one slam into his chest as the glass shattered.  Pain traveled across his body from each strike.

He was drifting and battling the pain trying to follow the voice he heard calling to him.  The voice was his lifeline back to the world he knew.  This time he was determine that the outcome would be different, he wanted to live and return to protect his partner’s back.

Then he felt the rocks being moved off him until he could see a head of blond hair above him and he could breathe again.  A familiar hand grabbed his shirt pulling him toward the surface out of the blackness of the ocean and into the air.  The voice was getting closer and clearer while blue eyes reassured him as he was removed from the car.  Finally, the glass was holding, and behind the shooter was his partner protecting him.

Illya saw Napoleon began to relax; he skin under his hand began to cool, his fever broken.  He continued to talk about things they were planning to do.

“And I won the bet this time, you own me dinner and I am holding you to it,” Illya’s voice was no longer a shadow but loud and clear.

“I think I won the bet,” Napoleon managed to whisper.

Illya glanced at his partner and noticed brown eyes looking back at him. nbsp;

“So you decided to come back to the land of the living to argue with me,” Illya allowed the concern he had been feeling to lessen.  “And what makes you think you won the bet?”

“Senior agent by two years. I knew you would be here. Thank you.”  Napoleon said as he fell back into an easy sleep.

“Always partner.  When you are well enough, we will celebrate my friend.”  Illya made sure the blankets covering his partner were straightened before leaning back in the chair and allowing his body to be claimed by sleep.

“I’d be happy to join you,” Napoleon said quickly.

“What about your plans?”

“I’d enjoy spending the day with you.  How does an Ukrainian celebration the holidays?”

“Actually it is three day, Dec 31st, Jan 7th and Jan 13th.”imagesCA2ABQQG

“And people think you don’t know how to party,” Napoleon teased.

The 31st involves festive foods, and a decorate firtree, to see off the old year and bring in only good things. On streets, you can hear laughter and see fireworks. It is the day that Did Moroz and Sengurochka pass out Christmas gifts.”

imagesCACUNC67More gifts and food why am I not surprised that you would be interested in going to the celebration.”

Ignoring him, Illya continued. “On January 7th families celebrate Christmas with a twelve course meatless meal.  And on the 13th the old New Year eve, we have celebrations with carolers going from house to house playing pranks or performing small plays. Finally, after supper neighbors apologize for the possible wrongs to each other bringing the New Year in with peace and harmony.”

“And you do this yearly?”

“No,” Illya admitted looking at his partner, “I have not had family to share it with, but this year.”

Yes partner, we’re family.”

"Napoleon, do you have plans for New Year's Eve?" Illya asked quietly after playing with his pen for a while avoiding looking directly at his partner.

"I've some fires in the works but nothing definite. Why?"  imagesCACTDUAU

"It does not matter, if you are are doing something."

"Oh no you don't partner. Why did you ask?"

"My friends from Little Odessa invited me to join them celebrating the New Years, and said to bring a friend. I thought if you had nothing to do, I would invite you. You have shown me your celebrations, and I want to return the kindness."

“Well tovarisch you made quite a haul yesterday.”  after

“Haul? nbsp; I am not sure what you mean.”

“It just a saying that meaning you received a lot of presents.”

I thought it was because that is what is expected during Christmas.”

“No, it’s because they like you including Aunt Amy’s dinner invitation.”

“Your aunt is a wonderful woman opening her home to me and to buy me a gift on top of it.  I just do not understand why everyone has been so kind to me.”

“It’s simple my stubborn Russian friend.  Even though you don’t show others you care, they know.”

Illya watched his partner's reaction as he handed out the gifts until he took mercy on the man.

"Did you like what I got you?" Illya asked his quiet partner.

Napoleon looked questioning at him. He hadn't received anything from the Russian.tickets 3

"If you would have worked on your reports, you would have found it. It was the first one I placed this morning."

Under his files, he found an envelope with tickets to a sold out play.

"How?"

"A friend. Which woman will take?"

"I'll be asking my closest friend."

"And who is that?"

"You tovarisch Merry Christmas."
